The town of Mazarron is, in
fact, two separate locations. The town was once an old mining town and there
is much evidence still around that can testify to its history. The Port, or
Puerto de Mazarron as it is correctly called, is about 3kms south east of the
town and is a thriving fishing centre and holiday venue. During July and
August it becomes a hive of activity as people of all nationalities, but
especially Spanish people from the inland Cities, swell its regular population
many fold. Outside of these months it is still a popular destination but
without the hectic activity of the high summer. The Council of Mazarron and
indeed the Regional Council of Murcia as well, are investing heavily to
improve the facilities and nowhere is this more evident than around the new
marina with its underground parking area at the end of the maritime paseo,
with its many restaurants and shops. To the east of Puerto, within
the Bay of Mazarron, there are the pretty villages of Isla Plana and L'Azhoria,
the latter being a very popular dive centre. To the west of Puerto there is
the popular holiday resort called Bolnuevo, with its designated sports beach
and its world renowned sand sculptures where many years of erosion by the wind
have carved intricate patterns in the sandstone at the bottom of the cliffs.
